What is AMATYC?
The American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC)
is the only organization exclusively devoted to providing a national
forum for the improvement of mathematics education in the first
two years of college. AMATYC has more than 2,200 individual members
and approximately 150 institutional members in the United States
and Canada.
The 44 affiliate organizations,
serving 47 states and one Canadian province, form a leadership pool
and information network that is coordinated by AMATYC and is dedicated
to meeting the challenges facing two-year college mathematics education.
What is the Mission of AMATYC?
The American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC)
mission is to promote and increase awareness of the role of two-year
colleges in mathematics education, and to:
- Ensure the preparation of scientifically and technologically
literate citizens who are capable of making educated decisions,
who have skills needed by business and industry, and who will
continue to educate themselves;
- Lead the development and implementation of curricular, pedagogical,
and assessment standards for two-year college mathematics education;
- Assist in the preparation and continuing professional development
of a competent and diverse mathematics faculty skilled in a variety
of teaching and learning techniques;
- Serve as a network for communication, policy determination,
and action among faculty, affiliates, and other professional organizations;
and
- Communicate two-year college mathematics perspectives in public,
business, and professional sectors.
What is the Role of AMATYC?
In addition to providing high quality professional development
for mathematics faculty, AMATYC promotes and participates in national
initiatives that benefit lower division collegiate mathematics education.
AMATYC is a member of the Conference
Board of the Mathematical Sciences and the Triangle Coalition
for Science and Technology Education and is an Education Associate
of the American Association
of Community Colleges (AACC). AMATYC leaders serve on the Mathematical
Sciences Education Board and on other mathematics and mathematics
education boards.
