Committees are critical to the fulfillment of AMATYC's mission. AMATYC is very grateful to those individuals who help these committees and AMATYC to serve its members. Volunteers are always welcome. Contact committee chairs if you would like to get involved.



Developmental Mathematics (Link to the Developmental Mathematics Community)

The purpose of the Developmental Mathematics Committee (DMC) of AMATYC is to improve the quality of developmental mathematics programs in colleges by providing a forum for the exchange of ideas.
In addition, the DMC strives to

  • Provide opportunities for professional development on proven practice for developmental mathematics faculty;
  • Share best practices for curriculum and instruction that promote successful matriculation into gateway college mathematics courses and other courses requiring quantitative tools;
  • Increase involvement with national policy-making boards on issues related to college-readiness;
  • Strengthen connections with other professional organizations regarding concerns of developmental mathematics; and
  • Communicate the issues of developmental mathematics reform and the consequences of recent state-required mandates.

Equity Committee (Link to the Equity Committee Community)

The purpose of the Equity Committee is to increase mathematics achievement for diverse learners.

The committee:

  • educates about equitable classroom practices and fosters a dialogue on how to improve them;
  • provides opportunities to learn about and discuss structural inequality and organizational change;
  • increases awareness about issues of diversity within AMATYC membership and leadership; and
  • works collaboratively with other AMATYC committees, Project ACCCESS, and ANets to promote equity.

Innovative Teaching and Learning Committee (Link to the ITLC Community)

The goals of the Innovative Teaching and Learning Committee are to: (1) Identify and examine issues
that pertain to effective teaching and learning, distance learning and technology in education as they
relate to mathematics students, faculty, programs and curricula in the first two years of college; (2)
Facilitate sharing and networking on crucial issues, ideas, and current practices in traditional, hybrid,
distance and active learning; (3) Develop criteria for evaluating data, software, and internet resources;
(4) Share demonstrably effective ways to implement these resources; and (5) Maintain and update
position papers on effective teaching and learning..

Mathematics and its Application for Careers (Link to the Mathematics and its Application for Careers Community)

This committee addresses mathematics for Engineering Tech, Health areas, Business Tech areas, Information Tech areas, Emerging tech areas, Trades, etc. Topics the committee might work with include: Transfer of Engineering Tech math courses and Math needs for students in the health areas. The committee may provide example programs from some of the areas and provide good themed short session on these areas.

Mathematics Standards in the First Two Years of College (IMPACT) (Link to the Standards Committee Community)

This committee will focus on promoting the AMATYC standards as well as maintaining the digital products to support those standards.  The goals of this committee are 1) to establish and implement a marketing campaign including but not limited to a series of regularized activities to promote widespread  implementation of the standards in the first two years of college mathematics, 2) to establish and implement the web presence for the standards, 3) to submit articles centered on the standards for the AMATYC News and the MathAMATYC Educator at least once a year,  4)  to establish and implement a process of regular review of the standards in the same manner as the position statements are reviewed regularly, 5) to ensure consistency among the standards and other AMATYC documents, and  6) promote the standards beyond AMATYC members. The membership of the committee is open to the AMATYC community.

The role of the AMATYC Statistics Committee is to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas, the sharing of resources and the discussion of issues of interest to the statistics community. In particular:
• To provide professional development and support for the teaching and learning of statistics
• To foster the use of the GAISE guidelines in the first two years of college
• To serve as a liaison with four-year college faculty, other mathematical organizations and professional statistics organizations in order to share resources.

College of the Canyons


Mathematics Intensive (Link to the Mathematics Intensive/College Mathematics Committee Community)

The focus of the group would be to concentrate on courses past the developmental/foundations level. Such courses may lead to AA or AS degrees, be used as transfer credit, or be taken for student enrichment. Possible subgroups would be: College Algebra, Statistics, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Differential Equations, Linear Algebra.

Placement/Assessment Committee (Link to the Placement/Assessment Committee Community)

The focus of this committee would be "to serve as a resource for the AMATYC membership on issues related to Placement, Assessment of student outcomes and mathematical programs." Sub-groups could include: classroom assessment, course and program assessment, and placement.

Teacher Preparation Committee (Link to the Teacher Preparation Committee Community)


The AMATYC Teacher Preparation Committee provides a forum to:

  1. Examine implications of preK–12 mathematical and professional standards on the teacher preparation curriculum and courses taught during the first two years of college;
  2. Facilitate sharing of curricular resources, best practices, and innovative ideas used in mathematics courses for prospective preK-6 teachers;
  3. Provide support and professional development to new and veteran mathematics faculty involved in the education of preK-6 teachers of mathematics.

Research in Mathematics Education for Two-Year Colleges Committee (Link to the Research in Mathematics Education for Two-Year Colleges Committee Community)

The purpose of the Research in Mathematics Education for Two-Year Colleges (RMETYC) Committee is to encourage quality research in mathematics education in two-year colleges. RMETYC will provide organizational support and mentoring for faculty researchers and institutions conducting research in mathematics education and its application in promoting effective teaching strategies. RMETYC will also provide support for the dissemination of findings and results emerging from research conducted with two-year colleges.

Division/Department Leadership Network (Link to the Division/Department Leadership Network Community)

To provide professional development opportunities for mathematics department leaders (e.g. coordinators, chairs, etc.), to increase communication within the ANet's constituency to enhance professional networking and support systems for mathematics department leaders, and to disseminate and discuss information on issues that impact college mathematics department leaders, particularly when the information applies to mathematics in the first two years of college.

International Mathematics Network (Link to the International Mathematics Network Community)

To promote global awareness among the AMATYC community by providing information on best practices and research studies regarding the teaching and learning of mathematics from around the world, creating professional development opportunities for the instruction of mathematics and statistics in a globalized context, sharing current information about international education conferences and online webinars, and facilitating the building of collaborations among mathematics educators, students, and organizations, who are interested in study abroad or professional exchange programs, global internships, volunteering, and service learning.

Adjunct Faculty Issues Network (Link to the Adjunct Faculty Issues Network Community)
To improve the status of adjunct faculty within two-year colleges, to disseminate and discuss information on issues that impact adjunct faculty at two-year colleges, to increase communication within the committees to enhance professional networking and support systems for adjunct faculty at two-year colleges both inside and outside AMATYC, to provide greater professional development opportunities for adjunct faculty at two-year colleges, and to cultivate greater participation of adjunct faculty in AMATYC and its regional affiliates.

Mathematics for Liberal Arts Network (Link to the Mathematics for Liberal Arts Network Community)
To create and maintain a learning community for teachers of Mathematics for Liberal Arts Students by identifying general topics covered in a liberal arts mathematics courses, by discussing issues related to the transferability, prerequisite skills, and correct student placement in these courses, by discussing the pedagogy related to delivery formats such as face to face, online, and blended classes as well as active learning strategies, by providing support to community college mathematics faculty in development of such courses, and by sharing best practices in teaching liberal arts mathematics courses.
