Welcome to AMATYC!

Welcome to the website of the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC). We hope that you find this site useful and informative.

AMATYC is the only national organization devoted solely to issues facing mathematics educators in the first two years of college. While many of our members are employed at two-year colleges, we also have many 4-year college and university faculty who are long-time members.

Since its beginnings in 1974, a major focus of AMATYC’s mission has been professional development. This includes our premiere annual conference in November each year, our monthly webinar series, a library of previously presented webinars through the webinar library, traveling workshops, and the conferences of our affiliate organizations.

Members new to the profession can participate in a two-year professional development and leadership program called Project ACCCESS, where fellows receive significant funding to attend the annual conference.

Members also benefit from the numerous AMATYC publications including a refereed journal (MathAMATYC Educator), AMATYC standards documents (Crossroads, Beyond Crossroads, and IMPACT), the newsletter, AMATYC News, and  the proceedings from the AMATYC Annual conferences. In addition, there are position statements that can used in your department, college, or state to help change policies to improve student learning.

Another major focus is connecting members with one another.  We have several committees and networks, each focused on a specific theme such as mathematical pathways, placement and assessment, innovative technology, developmental mathematics, statistics, technical math, and many more. These groups, which are free to join, allow members to discuss complex issues they face on a regular basis. To aid in these discussions, there is, an online site that allows you to join communities. There is a community for each of the committees and A-Nets. In the communities you will find discussion posts, repositories of materials through a library, and a member search that allows you to connect with other members of AMATYC.

There is also something for students.  AMATYC holds two student mathematics competitions each year.  The first is our long-standing, two-part Student Mathematics League enjoyed by close to 200 colleges and thousands of students each year. The second is a new competition focused on authentic problem solving and mathematical modeling, the Student Research League. Though this is fairly new, the number of students competing in this competition has been growing.

I hope that you will choose AMATYC to be your professional home.
